The biggest feature of this cow that came to the Pushkar fair is that it can be raised in less space and at less cost, while it gives good milk. You do not need extra space or hard work to raise this cow. You can also keep it in any room of the house or the courtyard behind the house. In South India, it is kept in the house like a family member. Even this cow can be seen roaming around comfortably in the house. Children can be seen playing with it.

Dr. Raju’s big contribution

In this very Gaushala, he worked on the Punganur cow for 14 years and prepared a two-and-a-half-foot Punganur cow.

In a conversation with ‘Kisan Tak’, Dr. Raju says that when Punganur is born, its height ranges from 16 inches to 22 inches. But the height of Laghu Punganur ranges from 7 inches to 12 inches. Punganur is a 112-year-old breed while Laghu Punganur was developed in 2019. According to Dr. Raju, the original Punganur cow existed in the Vedic period during the time of Rishi Vasishtha and Vishwamitra. But as the climate changed and the place changed, the height of Punganur increased. Earlier the height of Punganur was two and a half to three feet and it was called Brahma breed.

Specialty of Punganur breed

He says that the fat content in the milk of the Punganur breed is high. Apart from this, it is full of medicinal properties. For your information, let us tell you that the fat content in cow’s milk is usually 3 to 3.5 percent, while the Punganur breed milk contains 8 percent fat. Today this Punganur has become a big identity in the country and abroad, which a large number of people are coming forward to buy and raise.

On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen feeding fodder to cows at his residence. These cows were of the Punganur breed.
