The attack happened Thursday at one of Nasittuq Corporation’s workplaces on Brevort Island, Nunavut. The company did not release the victim’s phone call.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the relatives, friends and colleagues who are affected by this loss,” the company said in a statement. “Nasittuq Employers is providing support to the family of the deceased at this difficult time. In addition, we are providing counseling services to all employees affected by this.”
Polar bear attacks are extremely rare. Nasittuq said it is conducting a thorough investigation in conjunction with local government and regulatory agencies.
It is not yet clear if the bears were captured. The Royal Canadian Police did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
Canada has a polar bear population of more than 17,000, about a third of the estimated global total, according to the government. They are managed and protected through federal, provincial and territorial Natural World Acts.
Thursday’s incident comes a year after a mother and her 1-year-old son were attacked and killed in Alaska. The state’s public safety branch said the bear rampaged through the small town of Wells. A resident shot and killed the bear as it attacked Summer Mayomick, 24, and her son, Clyde Ongtowasruk.
