Just 110 days ago, Star Wars: The growth of Skywalker combined what is referred to as the $100 Million Losers Club. When its gross falls $100 million below its opening weekend 24, A rare accomplishment can join this club.
It’s an honor to be a part of a club. Not many films can be qualified to join the club in the first place as. . .well, very few films are capable of grossing $100 million on opening weekend. In actuality, only 60 films have accomplished that feat. Not only does a film must make at least $100 million on opening weekend. But that film has to make so much money that it is capable of a $100 million fall on the next weekend.
So, for example, a second-weekend of box office fall of $209.7 million for a film such as Avengers: Endgame is not a bad thing whatsoever. That only proves that the film’s opening weekend gross of $357.1 million has been so gargantuan that such a enormous second-weekend fall is inevitable.
But in other cases? It hasn’t been pretty. This was the case for The growth of Skywalker–which owns the fourth-lowest opening weekend of any club member. While the film’s $177.4 million opening weekend was inarguably impressive, its $72.4 million second-weekend gross wasn’t.
What film will join the $100 million box office club ?
Before the world struck at and shut cinemas down, it would have been a difficult call. Joining the 100 Million Losers Club is a massive achievement that could only be achieved by movies’ most rewarding. Not huge projects like Captain Marvel and Frozen II. That own the 21st-largest and 34th-largest opening weekends , respectively–were able to join the list in 2019. What film will make the jump?
The Club Members
Here’s a rundown how much those hollywood movie dropped on their weekends, and of each film that is part of the Million Losers Club:
Have a look at $100 million box office club and make them successful.
- Avengers: Endgame – $209.7 million fall
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi– $148.4 million fall
- Avengers: Infinity War– $142.9 million fall
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part two – $121.8 million fall
- The Lion King– $115.2 million fall
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $114.7 million
- Avengers: Age of Ultron – $113.6 million fall
- Captain America: Civil War – $106.5 million fall
- Star Wars: The Growth of Skywalker – $105 million fall
- The Avengers – $104.3 million fall
- Incredibles 2 – $102.4 million fall
- Jurassic World – $102.2 million fall
- Iron Man 3 – $101.6 million fall
All those movies came out over the past ten decades. And five of these movies came out in the last five years: Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, The Lion King and Star Wars: The Growth of Skywalker.
The 2020 Candidates
It appears you will need to be a movie that capitalizes on a franchise, to join the club. As you can see, comic books and Star Wars largely constitute the list, with a few outliers (The Lion King, Incredibles 2, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part two ) using viral fanbases.
With that said, you can look at a lot of 2020 releases which could have fit that criteria (before they had been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic):
- Mulan taps to the’90s Disney nostalgia that benefitted The Lion King
- No Time to Die are the final picture of the most rewarding set of 007 films so far
- Black Widow are the Hottest Marvel film since Spider-Man: Away From Home hit theaters last summer
- F9 will become the apocalyptic film in the multi-billion-dollar Fast & Furious franchise
- Wonder Woman 1984 are the sequel to the highest-grossing movie in the DC Extended Universe
While all of these movies will become hugely rewarding (whenever they release, that is). It is tough to imagine some of them joining the club. While Daniel Craig’s 007 films have been a massive success, none of them have made over $100 million on opening weekend; Iron Man 3 is the only non-Avengers Marvel films to make the cut so much; not even the Fast & Furious franchise’s greatest hollywood movie, Furious 7, can pull it off following a $147.2 million opening; and the first Wonder Woman only grossed $103.3 million on opening weekend.
My guess is that Mulan will come the closest from all those hollywood movie , as it’s a fairly adoring fanbase. YesThe Lion King has become the sole Disney re-imagining to pull it off so much –but Beauty and the Beast came after it made $174.8 million on opening weekend and $90.4 million on the next (an $84.4 million fall ).
But on the flip side, the next most important opening weekend belongs to The Jungle Book, which just earned $103.3 million in its first few days. Additionally, Beauty and the Beast appears to have had a much wider appeal than Mulan now has–so it appears unlikely.

Looking Movie Beyond 2020
Past those films, we will have to look that means this season will turn into the year a film does not combine the Million Losers Club since 2014.
We can begin with the DC Extended Universe, but Batman v Superman has become the only DCEU movie. So much that pulled it off–in un-spectacular style, mind you, as that films had the smallest opening weekend gross of any club member. Contenders you will find The Batman, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Aquaman two and the future Justice League follow up.
There’s Marvel. The majority of the upcoming Marvel films will step away from the familiar mold: The Eternals (which is probably going to be transferred from 2020 to 2021). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Morbius are new territory for the MCU.
After those movie launch, there are loads of highly anticipated Marvel sequels coming: Thor: Spider-Man 3, Black Panther 2, Love and Thunder, Captain Marvel two , etc.. But based on the Marvel performances, it is hard to believe any of them are going to make the cut.
Of all those movies, Black Panther two will have the best shot. Despite opening into a 202 million weekend, the hollywood movie avoided joining the club. On the next weekend, it grossed a whopping $111.7 million–quite near a $100 million gap.
Beyond that, the only other viable competitor is another Avengers film –whenever that will be published.
Finally, there is Star Wars. Whatever hollywood movie kicks off another trilogy from the Star Wars world will almost definitely join the club when it releases in December 2022.
Although, it has to be stated, that Star Wars: The Force Awakens prevented the clubdespite opening to an insane $248 million weekend. So it’s anyone’s guess this far out of another Star Wars film’s release.
